Natural Hair Products

I learned something amazing that has the potential to save my family a lot of money.  I only wish I had learned this much much sooner!  My daughter-in-law alerted me to this great blog that tells you how to make your own natural shampoos at home.  My daughter-in-law was able to make a shampoo and a conditioner using ingredients she had at home AND she said her hair hadn’t felt so good in a long time!  As a bonus, it is much less stress and strain on the environment to use these safe and natural and INEXPENSIVE ingredients!!!

So what are we all doing wasting the world and our own resources by buying the brands we’ve been marketed for sooo long????

The commercials aren’t actually true! The models in the commercial doesn’t even use the hair product she is modeling!  My daughter’s have been involved in a variety of commercials over the years and one of the main benefits has been that it has opened their eyes to the fact that the story told in every commercial is just a fictitious story designed to impress and inspire you to buy their product so that they can increase their profits.

I can’t wait to try this simple idea and am looking forward to running out of my current shampoo and condition!

Let’s Help Dr Nils Bergman with his Maternity Clinic Application!

This is URGENT.  Jill Bergman explains in her letter below that she needs responses in writing before 16 November!  Thanks for your help.  This will be beneficial to everyone in Cape Town, South Africa.

Dr Nils Bergmans Nino Clinic Application

Greetings!

How would you like to give birth in a home-like environment with all the comforts you wish for, but knowing that a doctor can be called if needed and a theatre provided immediately in case of an emergency, or if your baby was to require any hospital care? How would you like to have all that in your very own room where you can spend all day and all night with your baby?

Dr Nils Bergman has applied for a licence to build exactly such a private maternity hospital in Cape Town – to be called the NINO Clinic. NINO stands for Neuroscience for Improved Neonatal Outcomes: this will be based on the latest science and up to date best practice. Dr Bergman lectures all over the world on this topic (see www.skintoskincontact.com and www.kangaroomothercare.com)

The Provincial Minister of Health makes the decision, and needs to know that this really is wanted! We are asking for your letter of support!

The NINO CLINIC would:

-be a midwife-led birthing clinic supporting Natural Birth with active labour and doula support, that will empower mothers to experience birth as a natural part of life and not a hospital procedure.

-have full back-up secondary level obstetric support and theatre should an emergency caesarean be needed-without the frantic late referral to a hospital with worse outcomes.

-have a special focus on improved neonatal outcomes by keeping mother and baby together at all times- so avoiding toxic stress of separation; by adding kangaroo mother care, we call this Kangaroula support!

-for premature or low birth weight babies, feeling SAFE on Mothers chest is the place of care with all necessary technology added and specialist paediatrician care.

-provide all needed care to mother and newborn in the same room, with space for family as well.

-support self-attachment and breastfeeding, bonding and attachment for Improved Neonatal Outcomes Support and empower new parents in their early parenting.

-provide all needed health professional services in one place, for antenatal and postnatal needs.

-be affordable – with hospital facility costs half that of the private sector; (all medical professional fees paid in addition).

-be provided with tiered fee structure (budget, and upmarket choice for bigger rooms).

Your letter of support for the granting of the licence will be important: and we will need it if at all possible before the 16th November 2012 – sorry for the short notice!

Please include in your letter of support:

  • Your name, and interest in this proposed NINO Clinic,
  • Any reasons why you think there is a need for what we have described above,
  • Your feelings toward it and your statement of support.

Please email your letter to myself, Jill Bergman . It can be a pdf or other scan, or simply a plain email. Signed copies posted before 12th November can be sent to

Minister of Health

Many thanks,

Benefits of Babywearing

There is a great blog by Dr Sears on the benefits of babywearing.

Dr Sears provides lots of facts and figures and background information under each point, and the article is well worth reading. For those of you who just want the bottom line facts, here they are…
1. Sling babies cry less
2. Sling babies learn more
3. Sling babies are more organized
4. Sling babies get ‘humanized’ earlier
5. Sling babies are smarter

I guess you don’t actually need a sling – you could just hold and carry your baby in your arms. However, a convenient baby carrier or babywrap makes it a lot more comfortable and easier for the parents to give baby the benefits of holding while enabling them to do some other things at the same time!

Safely carrying our babies in a comfy wrap meets both our baby’s needs and our needs!

Babywearing International summarizes the benefits (with full references) of babywearing like this:
• Happy babies
• Healthy Babies
• Confident Parents
• Loving Caregivers
• Comfort and Convenience

I was so fortunate to be introduced to a babywrap when my first granddaughter was born.  I loved being able to carry her close to me in such a comfortable way.  It truly is a fantastic way to bond with your grandchildren.  As both of my daughter-in-laws are now pregnant, I have eagerly made new babywraps that are just as comfortable but even easier to use.  I only wish my two new grandbabies were going to be close so that I would have the opportunity of wearing them and bonding in this special way.  Alas they are a continent away, so I have made this video to show my daughter-in-laws how to use this new babywrap.

So what are you waiting for? Wear your baby more often starting today!

A daughter added to our family!

We have had a wonderful day watching Matt & Rachel exchange their vows of commitment for their life together. It was a very small intimate gathering, mainly with immediate family members. Rachel looked gorgeous in her wedding gown. Dr Fowler from Liberty University, their former teacher, mentor and friend, performed the ceremony. Rachel and Matt wrote their own vows and read them to each other with heartfelt emotion! It was a tribute to each of their commitment to Jesus Christ and to each other.

Matt & Rachel are off on a 2 day getaway to a real nice place in Monticello, Virginia – home of Thomas Jefferson. Their friends will be joining them on Saturday afternoon for a celebratory reception.

Today was quite cold – making the picture taking a challenge, but the forecast for the weekend is much warmer!

We are happy to welcome Rachel into the Hastings family and we look forward to seeing how God will bless their life together.
